Buchnevich vs Lehkonen

A 2nd round vs a 3rd round pick from 2013 draft, both rising fast over the last year.

Who is better now and who has the brighter future?

EDIT: where is the create poll button?

LW Ivan Kozlov - Val-d'Or Foreurs, QMJHL (2017 Draft)

2017 vs 2018 Draft

Now I know the 2016 Draft is said to be a notch above the 2017 Draft, but what about 2017 compared to 2018? If you were a GM which draft would you rather invest in?

C Alexandre Fortin - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, QMJHL (2015 undrafted; 2016 signed, CHI)

Absolutely no talk on the undrafted junior aged prospect who the Blackhawks are considering giving a 9 game regular season trial. He was even on a line with Kane at one point in the preseason and has been putting up points. What do the Hawks have in him? Quite rare a teenager comes out of nowhere like this, but it happens a year after his Rouyn-Noranda teammate Philippe Myers did the same just one year earlier.

G Olivier Rodrigue -Drummondville Voltigeurs (2018 draft)

The next Lindros

Not so much a player at his calibur(but if you know a young player who could be half as good do name him) but are there any players who can match Lindros's mean streak but are also competent players

as of now what player do you pray your team can snag?? be realistic with your team's expectations i.e. San Jose wont be bad enough to get Patrick(realistically of course). I'd love it if Ottawa could get Gabriel Vilardi or Eeli Tolvanen.

Im also gonna say the leafs would **** in their pants if they got Timothy Liljegren.

C Patrick Harper - Boston University (138th, 2016, NSH)

Didn't see a thread about this, so I figured i'd start one to keep tabs on this kid.

He scored 8 goals in 2 exhibition games playing on BU's top line... 5 in the first game, 3 in the second. To top it off, he scored 2 more in the season opener vs Colgate. The read on him after being drafted out of Avon Old Farms was that he is tremendously skilled, a natural goal scorer, but would have to overcome his lack of size. The early returns are good. I had already planned to watch as much BU as possible to keep up with Dante Fabbro, but I'll have a curious eye on this one as well.

My initial instinct was that it had to be a product of playing with Bellows, Keller, McAvoy, Fabbro, Krys, etc...but from speaking to a couple of the guys who cover the Terriers via Twitter, he's been creating the offense on his own and even gaining time and space for some of those other guys through his work with the puck.

Interesting fifth round pick.

Russian Prospects (2017 Draft) - 2016/2017 Season Thread

Hi Everyone!

A bit out of time now, but I managed to finish my start-of-the-season watchlist (yes, it's more of a watchlist than a ranking) of draft-eligible Russian prospects. Some say that this draft year is weak, but, to be honest, I don't really care, as so far I really like the Russian draft class. I also thought about the format of the watchlist and, since my posts have received such a good reception here, I decided to go with a 'straight out of my head' style - to write a description of my very very raw impressions of these guys. Of course, those impressions will change during the course of the season, but I hope it will be fun this way too. :)

1. Klim Kostin (W, 6'3", 196 lbs; Dynamo Moscow, KHL/Dynamo Balashikha, VHL/HK MVD Balashikha, MHL)
Klim Kostin is #3 at Bob McKenzies rankings, so I guess it is not a surprise that he is #1 at my list. Big kid, plays a creative game and definitely can finish. Heard of Nichushkin comparisons, but I think those are a lazy ones, it might sound a bit funny due to size difference, but Kostin's hands and vision remind me of Panarin a bit. And yes, so far I'm a fan.

2. Nikita A. Popugaev (W, 6'5.5", 202 lbs; Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL)
Popugaev is a really big bird, got some wheels and is a solid finisher, definitely can gain some more power though, so the result could be scary for his opponents.

3. Kirill Slepets (W/C, 5'10", 146 lbs; Loko Yaroslavl, MHL)
Slepets got really quick hands that can dribble, make a pass or shoot the puck with a quick release. That, while being a bit lightweight, sounds somewhat like Buchnevich. A bit of a slow start this season, but he was pretty good last year, at least good enough to make top 3 in my list.

4. Pavel Koltygin (C/W, 6'0", 192 lbs; Drummondville Voltigeurs, QMJHL)
Koltygin was always credited with being able to provide some physical power at high mobility, so here Nichushkin comparison might be in place. Was also credited as a biggest Russian talent for this draft some time ago, but missed a lot of time last year due to injury.

5. Mark Rubinchik (LHD, 6'0", 181 lbs; Saskatoon Blades, WHL)
What I like about Rubinchik is that he seems to be playing that patient "think first" game, just like Provorov, that's why I have him a bit higher than other D prospects here.

6. Dmitriy Samorukov (LHD, 6'2", 181 lbs; Guelph Storm, OHL)
Comparing to Rubinchik, Samorukov plays more dynamic and aggressive game, a bit like Sergachyov, except Sergachyov is in another league of physicality. Actually for Samorukov I like Marchenko comparison more.

7. Artyom Minullin (RHD, 6'2", 202 lbs; Swift Current Broncos, WHL)
Here I have to plead guilty: Minullin should belong in the 'limited view' part, as I haven't seen him enough to evaluate him properly yet. Still too much of good things heard about him, so I decided to put him here.

8. Georgiy Ivanov (W/C, 6'0", 187 lbs; Loko Yaroslavl, MHL)
I was extremely surprised when I found out that he is just 6'0": kid plays aggressive and much bigger than his size — in a blink of an eye he will be in front of the net and noone will get him away from there before he has done all his stuff.

9. Ivan Chekhovich (W, 5'10", 176 lbs; Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL)
Some good hands, vision and hockey sense here — reminds me of Dadonov in that way.

10. Alexey Lipanov (C/W, 6'0", 165 lbs; Dynamo Balashikha, VHL/HK MVD, MHL)
Since I have compared Chekhovich to Dadonov, I will have to compare Lipanov to Shipachyov, as they had played together for so long. And actually that comparison has something about it — Lipanov is also a great skater, passer and a hard working type.

11. Yaroslav Alexeyev (W, 5'11", 145 lbs; Sherbrooke Phoenix, QMJHL)
Undersized kid with good hands and a finishing touch — sounds like Tolchinskiy, maybe a bit less electrifying though.

12. Daniil Tarasov (GK, 6'3", 163 lbs; Tolpar Ufa, MHL)
Tarasov was one of the main reasons for Russia U18 NT decent result at WJC, he looks to be combining a modern patient goaltending style with some breathtaking saves and in that way Bobrovsky comparison is the first thing that comes to my mind. Unfortunately Tarasov got seriously injured recently, so he will miss at least couple of months of the season.

13. Ivan Kozlov (W/C, 6'0", 209 lbs; Val-d'Or Foreaurs, QMJHL)
Kozlov was able to be pretty dominant physically at the U18 WJC and in this way I think he could be the next Dergachyov (yes, skating is a question here too).

14. Kirill Kozhevnikov (W, 6'1", 203 lbs; Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk, KHL/ Mamonti Yugri Khanty-Mansiysk, MHL)
Kozhevnikov is pretty strong and can really skate and shoot the puck. Already debuted in KHL and looked pretty interesting there, seems to be a bit of a North-South guy like Guryanov. A good candidate to become a sleeper pick.

15. Maxim Zhukov (GK, 6'3", 181 lbs; Green Bay Gamblers, USHL)
When I first saw Zhukov I thought that I didn't see this kind of size and mobility combination since Vasilevskiy. Unfortunately he let in everything he could at the U18 WJC and reportedly had somekind of issues with coaches at Loko team, so now he went after a career restart in USHL. He is only 15-th on my list just because I totally don't know what to expect from him now.

LV
Limited viewing group — players, who I think could be interesting, yet all are more or less mysteries to me now:

German Poddubny (C/W, 6'1", 183 lbs; Erie Otters, OHL)
Daniil Vertiy (W, 5'11", 206 lbs; North Bay Battalion, OHL)
Kirill Maximov (W, 6'2", 190 lbs; Saginaw Spirit, OHL)
Daniil Sokolka (W, 5'9", 166 lbs; Acadie-Bathurst Titan, OHL)
Maxim Marushev (C, 6'0", 175 lbs; Irbis Kazan, MHL)
Vladislav Kazamanov (RHD, 6'2", 183 lbs; HK MVD Balashikha, MHL)
Dmitriy Rodionychev (LHD, 6'3.5", 229 lbs; HC Sarov, VHL/Chayka Nizhniy Novgorod, MHL)
Artyom Melnikov (GK, 6'0", 161 lbs; Loko Yaroslavl, MHL/Loko-Yunior Yaroslavl, NMHL)
Alexey Toropchenko (W, 6'3", 187 lbs; HK MVD Balashikha, MHL)

Overagers (in no particular order - just wrote them down as soon as I remembered)

As usual (at least in the last years) we have a lot of talented draft-eligible overagers, and, as we can see, NHL teams are not shy of picking those nowadays. So here is my top overager watchlist (in no particular order) with a description of what I expect from them this season.

Vladislav Sukhachyov (GK, 5'10.5",181 lbs; Chelmet Chelyabinsk, VHL/Belie Madvedi Chelyabinsk, MHL; 1 year overage)

Sukhachyov is stopping almost everything on each level he plays (now in VHL). The thing that he went undrafted because of his size is pretty much absurd to me.

Vladimir Kuznetsov (W, 6'2", 208 lbs; Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL; 1 year overage)
Also a notable undrafted kid, can prove that he got enough firepower to make everyone forget about skating issues.

Yevgeniy Mityakin (W/C, 6'3", 198 lbs; Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, KHL; 1 year overage)
Big kid who is a bit slow at his transition to pro hockey, but should get his chance nevertheless. Got injured at the start of the season though, so he'll miss some games.

Mikhail Sidorov (RHD, 6'0", 214 lbs; Ak Bars Kazan, KHL; 2 years overage)
Strong right handed D, who quickly became a full-time defender at Ak Bars team and that can be considered as kind of a quality mark.

Yegor Voronkov (LHD, 6'0", 183 lbs; Vityaz Podolsk, KHL; 2 years overage)
Voronkov already got WJC experience last season, so now we are hoping he will get some bigger role there.

Alexandr Polunin (LW, 5'9", 172 lbs; Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL; 2 years overage)
For Polunin the biggest question is if he is good enough even without Kraskovskiy and Korshkov, he should get the chance to prove it at this WJC.

Kirill Pilipenko (W/C, 5'9", 183 lbs; Dynamo Balashikha, VHL/Dynamo Moscow, KHL/HK MVD Balashikha, MHL; 2 years overage)
Those, who have followed my lists/posts, probably noticed that I really like this skilled kid, this year I'm hoping for a breakout performance from him.

Yegor Zaitsev (LHD, 5'11", 185 lbs; Dynamo Balashikha, VHL/Dynamo Moscow, KHL/HK MVD Balashikha, MHL; 1 year overage)
Zaitsev has made everyone talk about him this KHL preseason and is continuing to look solid in VHL.

Artyom Volkov (LHD, 6'2", 194 lbs; Dynamo Balashikha, VHL/Dynamo Moscow, KHL/HK MVD Balashikha, MHL; 2 years overage)
Another defender overlooked after the unsuccessful 2015 U18 WJC, will try to prove them wrong at the U20.

Nikita Makeyev (RHD, 5'8", 168 lbs; Zvezda Chekhov, VHL/Krasnaya Armiya Moscow, MHL; 1 year overage)
Small defender already established himself as a VHL regular at the start of the season — it's hard not to root for this guy.

Artur Tyanullin (W/C, 5'10", 173 lbs; Ottawa 67's, OHL; 2 years overage)
Once touted as the most talented 1997 born Russian player, Tyanullin needs to remind us about that and do it already this season.

Daniil Miromanov (W, 6'4", 193 lbs; Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL; 2 years overage)
Big two-way kid had a high-scoring preseason, so probably we can expect something good this year.

Igor Shvyryov (C, 6'0", 205 lbs; Stalnie Lisy Magnitogorsk, MHL/Metallurg Magnitogorsk, KHL; 1 year overage)
I've criticized Shvyryov for inconsistency last season, but so far at the start of the season he is very impressive.

Andrey Altybarmakyan (W, 5'10", 183 lbs; Serebryannie Lvy St. Petersburg, MHL/SKA-Neva St.Petersburg, VHL; 1 year overage)
Great start of the season in MHL, got called up to VHL and is totally fine there too.

Anton Krasotkin (GK, 6'0", 179 lbs; HC Ryazan, VHL/Loko Yaroslavl, MHL/Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL; 2 years overage)
Krasotkin has a reputation of the 'second after Samsonov' and this status should allow him to show what he's got at the SuperSeries.

Vladislav Lukin (RW, 6'1", 196 lbs; Tri-City Americans, WHL; 2 years overage)
Getting 6 points in one WHL game is pretty intriguing, let's see what happens next.

Andrey Svetlakov (C, 6'0", 203 lbs; CSKA Moscow, KHL/ Zvezda Chekhov, VHL; 3 years overage)
Svetlakov's teammate Maxim Mamin got drafted as a triple overager this year and I don't see why Svetlakov couldn't repeat that.

Maxim Mizyurin (C, 6'3", 203 lbs; Val-d'Or Foreaurs, QMJHL; 1 year overage)
Physically gifted center, who was considered a big talent a year ago, decided to try to leave Omsk and go to the Q.

Ivan Kosorenkov (W, 6'0", 189 lbs; Victoriaville Tigres, QMJHL; 1 year overage)
A very common opinion on Kosorenkov was that he would be drafted if he had enough exposure, this season he should have enough of it.

Yegor Babenko (W, 5'9", 157 lbs; Lethbridge Hurricanes, WHL; 2 years overage)
Babenko was invited to the main training camp at Arizona, but couldn't earn the contract, I hope that motivates him for a good sophomore WHL season.

Loko line (HC Ryazan, VHL/Loko Yaroslavl, MHL):
Danil Yurtaikin(LW, 5'11", 170 lbs; 2 years overage)
Denis Alexeyev (C, 6'0", 183 lbs; 1 year overage)
Roman Krikunenko (RW, 5'10", 168 lbs; 1 year overage)

This line was pretty dominant at junior level and they are now trying to translate that to VHL. Looking forward to see what they can show at the SuperSeries.

Alexandr Samoylov (GK, 6'2", 179 lbs; Zvezda Chekhov, VHL/Krasnaya Armiya Moscow, MHL; 2 years overage)
Latest entry here, Samoylov just had three huge (and I mean it) debut games in VHL, sounds interesting to say at least.

I think I need to stop here, as I could go on with this list like forever. Now you have an idea what is/was going on in my head at the start of the season. :) As usual, your comments, updates, additions, corrections, contributions and basically almost everything are welcome.

Surprised there wasn't a thread about this guy.

The guy was a big minute eater for NoDak last season en route to an NCAA championship last season and I was always impressed by him. He's not exactly a dynamic player but he's pretty safe and smart in terms of how he plays. From what I've heard, he's had quite a training camp in Los Angeles and just recently got sent down (just like another NoDak defenceman, Troy Stecher).

I think the guy can definitely step in and become an impactful NHL player. He's got a good frame, his skating is good enough and he processes the game quite well.

Players with Junior eligibility who made opening night rosters

This year seems fairly high in this regard, I'll post the kids who still have WJC eligibility who are starting the season with the big club. Please point out if I missed anyone and I'll edit this post.

Anaheim- Larsson

Arizona- Chychrun, Crouse, and Strome

Calgary-Tkachuk

Carolina-Aho

Columbus-Werenski. Dubois (on roster as a cap move, should be sent down today)

Edmonton-Puljujarvi,

Florida-Denis Malgin

Minnesota-Erickson-Ek (technically in Iowa due to salary-cap/immegration issues, not expected to play a game there, should be back up by the weekend to play in the NHL)

Montreal-Sergachev

New Jersey-Zacha, Blake Speers (appears to still be with the team, expected to be sent down with the PAP pickup).

NYI-Beauvillier, Barzal

Ottawa-Chabot

Philadelphia-Provorov and Konecny

Toronto-Marner and Matthews

Winnipeg-Laine

Late-birthdays from 2015 without WJC who have crack lineups include Connor (WPG) and Rantanen (Col).

2nd year players with eligibility left are McDavid and Hanifin.

On a side note, a few players who played in the CHL last year and would still be U-20 appear to of been lost to the AHL, this includes Nattinen, and Christain Fischer. Jack Roslovic was expected to go to the Knights, but now appears to be with the Moose after leaving Miami (Ohio).

It will be exciting to track how these players do, how many get more than 9 games (and then 40), and if we see any at the WJC.

Drafting for a pool this weekend with 3 first rounders. Want to take a top young d-man. A guy like Chychrun fell a long ways but that doesn't necessarily mean a lot. Also a lot of gems come out of round 2. Anyhow, points for d-men is 2 x Goals + 1 x Assists.

That said, how would folks rank the top 5 d-men coming out of the 2016 draft?

EP: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=273659

Was a member of the ill-fated Team Russia U-18 MHL squad as a 16 year old. Granted, he only put up 5 points in 17 MHL games for that squad, but only a select few 2017 eligibles even played for the team (he and Kirill Slepets are the two that come to mind immediately, might have missed some).

Got barred from participation in the U18 WJC as a result of being on that team, due to their involvement with the Russian meldonium scandal.

Good size at 6’0” and 192 lbs according to his EP profile.

Off to a hot start for Drummondville so far at over a point-per-game pace. I compiled a little spreadsheet of all the PPG players in the most significant North American junior leagues (OHL, WHL, QMJHL, USHL) who were drafted in 2016 (I may have missed some, it was a brief scan).

Anyone else have any thoughts on (or live viewings of) this guy? More info would be greatly appreciated.

'The moment I've been waiting for': Laine set for 1st game as Winnipeg Jet
CBC News Posted: Sep 30, 2016 12:28 PM CT Last Updated: Sep 30, 2016 12:28 PM CT

Patrik Laine knows expectations are high but he's not promising any wizardry as he heads into his first-ever NHL game tonight.

"I know that everybody's expecting me to do something magical or something, but I just want to play my game and play the team's game and just give the best shot that I have on the ice, every shift," the Winnipeg Jets' highly-touted rookie said after a morning practice on Friday.

"I know that's enough for me and my teammates so I don't have to worry what other people are expecting."

...

Jets fans have been anticipating Laine's debut since the 18-year-old Finnish forward was drafted second-overall in the NHL draft earlier this year. So has Laine.

"It's the moment I've been waiting for — to put on that jersey. It's going to be awesome," he said. "First game here at my new home arena. I'm just looking forward to the first shift."

Patrik Laine makes own mark in Jets debut
No. 2 pick gets goal, assist in win against Hurricanes
by Tim Campbell @TimNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer
October 13th, 2016

...

Laine's things are a hard, accurate shot, and puck sense, qualities important in his breakout 2015-16 season, when he was on Finland's winning World Junior Championship team, named MVP of the playoffs in Finland's top league when his Tappara team won the title, and named MVP of the IIHF World Hockey Championship when Finland won the silver medal.

...

His first shot on goal came at 10:42 of the third period, then his next one was a snap shot that rang in off the right post behind screened Carolina goalie Cam Ward at 13:33. It was Winnipeg's first power-play goal in five opportunities and made it 4-3.

With Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck off for an extra attacker, Laine made a cross-ice pass deep in the zone to captain Blake Wheeler, and Wheeler put it on Mathieu Perreault's tape at the edge of the crease for the game-tying goal with 1:29 left.

...

Perreault said Laine has been feeling pressure.

...

"There's a lot of pressure on him. You can tell. You can tell he's feeling it. But I'm very happy to see how he responded late in the third when we absolutely needed a goal. The game had been absolutely [bad] for us all night and he comes up with a big goal. Now we have life, then he makes another good play and we have the tying goal. Even in overtime, he made a great play up the ice and I just missed. It's nice to see him perform that well in the third."

...

"I've heard that he was a big-time player in big situations and he showed it tonight.

"In the third, when we absolutely needed it with our backs against the wall, he came up big with a goal and an assist at the end of the game. That's what those special players do, they step up at the right times."

With the Jets down 4-2 and about 10 minutes to go, coach Paul Maurice moved Laine up to play with Scheifele and Wheeler.

...

Wheeler said confidence was the catalyst for Laine.

"It's so hard in this league to build confidence," Wheeler said. "You're kind of starting from scratch. He knows what type of player he is and he knows what he's done in the past, but until you do it on this level, you just have that little bit of doubt.

"I think once you saw him pop that one in, he took off. It wasn't just the chances he was creating, he was winning every puck battle. He looked like a real force out there."

Laine got a roar from the MTS Centre fans during introductions. When he scored in the third, fans were out of their seats with a standing ovation.

"I'd like to get a streak going, score some more goals," Laine said. "It was just easier and easier to play after the goal. There's so much energy when you score. It was an energy boost and it was nice to go out there."

This guy deserves his own thread.

Signed by the Devils off an ATO, 18 year old Colby Sissons has 2 goals and 8 points in 7 games for the Broncos, two points off the team lead in D scoring in 4 fewer games.

If you go by P/PG, he's actually 3rd in the entire WHL in scoring by defensemen.

How did he go undrafted? He's not even small, the dude's 6'2, 185 lbs.
